Positioning Yourself To Win The Best Career Opportunities

Career opportunities can open up for you at any time, and there are many people who spend years in jobs they never had any expectation of getting, and that they had made no conscious effort to go after. However, it is important to understand that these lucky breaks don't just happen to anyone. They happen to the people who have consciously prepared for them! Yes, although it may seem as though luck has been the only factor in someone's success, there is usually a lot more to it than that.

Learning how to position yourself so that you are able to take advantage of luck is a very valuable skill to have. It really comes down to maximizing your own potential. Firstly, although people can stumble upon unexpected opportunities for success, this only happens when they have some fairly clear idea of where they would want to be. So, the first step is to look at the job listings, and make a conscious choice of the type of work you want. When you are aware of the opportunities career advancement is a lot easier to plan.

You don't have to be specific at this stage, and you don't yet have to be qualified. This is a situation where you need to think positively and optimistically. Be realistic, but don't limit yourself as so many other people do. Your capability is likely to be far higher than you have been led to believe. Just make a list of the types of job you would like to do, and note the qualification requirements for each job. When you have made a short list, you should be able to see which opportunities you can follow, and which training courses will afford you the most choice.

If you are a mature student, it is vital that you keep working while you are studying. This may bring career opportunities all by itself, but it will certainly allow you to build up an excellent work record to put on your resume. This is pretty much an essential in getting any good job in an economic climate where employers have plenty of choice. Keep your resume on your computer, and make it a constantly evolving work. Every time you complete more training, or just complete some more productive work time, update your resume. When you tailor it to your chosen opportunities career advancement becomes just a matter of time.

It is this resume which is your greatest asset, so build it up to the highest possible level. This is the tool which allows the so-called lucky people the breaks they seem to get. Whenever a good vacancy arrives, off goes the resume at the earliest opportunity. To make this even more effective, you can have different resumes for different kinds of job. They will all be accurate, but different parts of the resume will be emphasized. You can also go one step further and personalize the resume for one specific job. As few people bother to do this, it will make you stand out, and give you the greatest chance of securing one of those 'lucky' career opportunities.
